Watch Luke Combs Perfectly Deliver an Emotional Morgan Wallen Tribute Cover—With Wallen’s Mom in the Crowd

Only spending a decade in country music, Luke Combs has already proved himself to be a major performer in the genre. With hit albums like Fathers & Sons, the rising star has been showered with accolades and praise over the last few years. And when it comes to him performing live, there are few singers who compare. While there are more than a few hit performances from Combs, back in 2023, he took the stage with Morgan Wallen at the BMI Country Awards. Although singers have covered hit songs in the past, Combs decided to cover one of Wallen’s songs right in front of him.

While covering another singer’s songs can come with a great deal of pressure, those nerves only build when that original singer is right there. During the BMI Country Awards ceremony, both Wallen and Combs received the Songwriter of the Year award. And sharing the stage, Combs thought it was the best time to cover “Thought You Should Know.” Able to just sit back and listen to his song fill the venue, Wallen thanked Combs for such an honor.

“We wrote that song for my momma, and she’s right there,” Wallen told Combs, pointing into the crowd. “Thank you for singing that to her tonight.”

Luke Combs Admits “I Love This Song”

Gaining nearly three million views since it was uploaded, fans continue to visit the video with comments reading, “My beloved son’s favorite artist.  He died 12.16.19 at 35.  He introduced me to Luke and I love him.  I know he’d love Morgan’s work as well!  ‘Still my only damn son’.  Thank you, Luke!” Another person added, “You can tell he really wanted to do this song justice.  The amount of effort he put into it was impressive and it sounded great.”

Placed on Wallen’s album One Thing at a Time, the song focused on the words from a son to his mother. Wallen first revealed the song back in 2022 when he released it surrounding Mother’s Day. He took a moment to dedicate the song to his mom, Lesli. Even before Combs hit the first verse, he told Wallen, “By the way, I love this song a whole lot, man. Congrats again.”
