boygenius–a group of Phoebe Bridgers, Julian Baker, and Lucy Dacus–appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night (October 3) to perform a stunning rendition of “Cool About It.” The acoustic ballad appears on the group’s debut album, the record.

The trio stood around a mic in a darkened room, fully leaning into the song’s dramatics. Each singer wore a suit, which is typical for the band, while each of the verses describes one part of a relationship arc. First up to the mic was Baker.

Met you at the dive bar to go shoot some pool / And make fun of the cowboys with the neck tattoos / Ask you easy questions about work and school, Baker sang.

The song gets progressively richer throughout, with each member slowly joining in during the chorus. The final refrain showcased the group’s stunning harmonies with one another. At the end of the performance, they sealed the number with a three-way kiss.

boygenius released the record earlier this year. “The album is littered with cultural references of personal inspiration,” American Songwriter wrote in a review of the album. “Referencing the Beatles, Sheryl Crow, and Virginia Woolf, the three collaborators contribute tidbits from their upbringing with specificity and a sense of humor.”

The band is currently on tour in support of the record. They will wrap up their U.S. leg this week before heading overseas to Europe and the U.K. Find their full tour dates, HERE.

Even though they released an album only a few months ago, the group has announced another EP, the rest, that will arrive just in time for Halloween. the rest will expand on the record. The project is set to feature four new tracks, including a song they recently debuted on the road, “Black Hole.” The EP will arrive on October 13.
