Before she became one of Australia’s most popular roots-rock exports, Mia Dyson cut her teeth at cozy venues like the Empress Hotel, a 250-capacity club just north of downtown Melbourne. Recently, after touring with the likes of Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Nicks, Dyson went back to the Empress to film the video for “Fill Yourself,” the bluesy, guitar-driven single from her upcoming album, The Moment.
“It’s about trying to get love through to someone,” she says of the song, whose stomping grooves and bourbon-barrel vocals sound a bit like Lucinda Williams backed by a bar band. “It’s not easy, but it’s so amazing when it works. Because the message of the song is simple, we wanted to keep the video simple, too. Just the band and I at the Empress Hotel, a small club in Melbourne that has been supporting Australian musicians for decades — and a venue that I played often in the beginning of my career. It was a hot summer day, and we filmed with no air conditioning, but that’s exactly how a real band should be while performing: hot and sweaty.”
