Video: Toro Y Moi’s “New Beat”

Columbia, South Carolina native, ’80s-loving Chaz Bundwick, who goes by his made-up moniker Toro Y Moi, has partnered with Urban Outfitters on a new video for the song “New Beat,” off his album Underneath The Pine, which comes out February 22 on Carpark Records. In an interview with U.O., Bundwick says the record, a sort of companion piece to 2010’s Causers Of This that features live instrumentation instead of electronic instruments, was influenced by obscure Italian film composers. “I ended up finding this crazy old Italian film online, called La Ragazza or something, with a soundtrack by Piero Umiliani… The Italian guys have amazing, moving stuff,” Bundwick tells the hipster clothing line. The “New Beat” video comes on the heels of Underneath The Pine‘s first single, “Still Sound,” which features a similarly electro-funky vibe and ’80s dance video. While “Still Sound” showed Bundwick and his live band playing music and playing in the park in what seems to be the soft light of South Carolina, “New Beat” is permeated with smoke and picks up on some of “Still Sound”‘s desolate, industrial locations. Both videos and the forthcoming album show an original, young songwriter who it seems we’ll be hearing a lot more from in the future.
