Chris and Oliver Wood probably didn’t anticipate their long and fruitful music careers while they listened to their father play songs around the campfire as children. After almost fifteen years in separate bands – Oliver in R&B/funk act King Johnson and Chris in jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood – the two brothers decided it was finally time to make music together, and thus The Wood Brothers was born.
“This is a tune we wrote around a bass riff Chris was playing at a sound check,” says Oliver of “Keep Me Around,” a track off of the band’s upcoming record The Muse (pre-order it here, here or here). “I immediately held my phone up to his bass and recorded it and put it aside for later. Eventually we found a complimentary guitar riff and turned it into a sing along. It was Buddy Miller’s idea to try the horns and we loved the way it came out!”
The video for “Keep Me Around” stays true to the easygoing feel that the Wood Brothers do so well. Taped in the studio while the band was recording the album, the video features little more than footage of the band playing the song in a warmly-lit, wood paneled studio.
Take a peek at three masters of their craft hard at work. Watch “Keep Me Around” below.
