After a long layoff, pop music duo Sixpence None The Richer (“Kiss Me,” “There She Goes”) are back, with a new album, Lost In Transition, due August 7.
Produced by Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty, Dixie Chicks) at PLYRZ Studios in Los Angeles, Lost In Transition is a mostly-live affair with few overdubs. There’s a little less sunshine in the band’s pop these days, as the album tackles darker themes — like “Sooner Than Later,” which Sixpence’s Leigh Nash and her husband wrote about the death of her father, and “Failure,” which deals with anxiety.
But it’s not all downbeat. Check out the video for “Radio,” filmed by BYUtv. “‘Radio’ is such a fun song to sing live,” Nash tells American Songwriter. “One of my all time favorites. The spirit of the song is very moving, as well as the melody itself.”
Matt Slocum sets the scene: “While driving and listening to the radio, an old favorite song inspires a man to reminisce about an old relationship born from a road trip. Not quite the cinematic lyrical brilliance of Richard Thompson’s ‘1952 Vincent Black Lightning,’ but nonetheless an attempt at that type of imagery in a pop song lyric.”
