Video Premiere: Rebecca Loebe, “Circus Heart”

Videos by American Songwriter

Indie-folk artist Rebecca Loebe’s third album Circus Heart, produced by Matt Sever (a.k.a. Matt The Electrician) hits stores September 18. It’s the followup to 2010’s Mystery Prize, which spent nine weeks on the Americana Top 40 charts. Loebe should be familiar to some for her appearance on The Voice, where she won over both Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera with a striking cover of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are.”

We’ve got the video for “Circus Heart,” the album’s warm and sunny title track.

“More than any other song on the album, ‘Circus Heart’ deals directly with how I view myself in the world,” Loebe tells American Songwriter. “I refuse to be one of those women who spends my entire adult life feeling old and apologizing for the space I take up. I don’t want to take myself too seriously. We had a lot of fun with this song from top to bottom. Matt the Electrician suggested using a drum beat with a Brazilian baio groove –inspired by old Brill Building recordings from the 60’s — and we just kept building it from there. I had the idea for the horn part in the shower, I sang it to Matt once and he layered an entire mariachi section in the bridge. We wanted to keep things light and goofy but also driving forward.”
