A steady beat, sultry vocals and understated black-and-white footage make for an undeniably suave music video, at least in the case of Lora Faye’s “All Night.” A Brooklyn native, Faye won the NewSong songwriting competition hosted by the NPR show Mountain Stage, allowing her to record “All Night” at at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, North Carolina. She shot the video in a single live take in a friend’s warehouse, giving it that feeling of authenticity. The song will appear on Faye’s upcoming 5-song EP, Waltzes, out August 15.

“The song came out of my thinking a lot about this rather slippery concept in Spanish folklore (which the poet Federico Garcia Lorca wrote a lot about) called ‘duende,’” says Faye, “which I’ve come to understand as that weird pleasure-pain that we seek in music. . . that familiar dark place we go to every once in a while when we listen or perform that feels both deeply natural but also kind of disembodied and magical. You can’t live there, I’m learning. But it’s nice to visit.”
