23 year-old Max Sollisch, a.ka. Dolfish, has a unique voice and lo-fi mindset. You might here traces of Daniel Johnston, The Mountain Goats and Neil Young in the Cleveland-based singer-songwriter’s music.

Check out the video for Dolfish’s “I’d Rather Disappear Than Stay the Same,” the title track to his upcoming album (out 10/30) below.

“This song is about the desire to change yourself,” Sollisch tells American Songwriter. “Verses one and two describe a character who wishes to be anything but his or her self but can’t change their genetic makeup, their desires — specifically their sexuality.

“Verse three finds the narrator looking to nature in a time of depression: Cicadas like small statues on my lawn/once you had a spirit, now its long long gone / its departure left you hollow while yesterday you sang / you would rather disappear than stay the same. This metaphor of the Cicada bug shedding its skin speaks to our ability to change our outward appearance, but not necessarily what’s going on on the inside.”
