At Buffalo Springfield’s tour opener at Oakland’s Fox Theater the other night, the band reportedly sounded as if they’d taken up right where they left off. The reunited Springfield, featuring original members Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and Richie Furay, cranked out vintage cuts like “On The Way Home,” “I Am A Child” and “For What It’s Worth.”
They also played a song not associated with the ’60s, but the ’90s — Neil Young’s oft-covered “Rockin’ In The Free World,” from his 1989 album Freedom.
In a pre-Bonnaroo conference call, Furay told us that adding the only non-Buffalo song to the set to close out the show was a group decision, and that they picked it for its barn-burning properties. Rock on.
Furay also mentioned that more tour dates were forthcoming, and that vinyl reissues of the band’s three albums were in the works.
