Despite the fact that he described himself to us as a “sinister motherf***r, ” Vic Chesnutt is a friendly guy. Last year, Chesnutt released Dark Developments, a collaboration with his Athens, Georgia neighbors Elf Power and local metal band the Amorphous Strums. Tomorrow, the southern gothic singer-songwriter returns with At The Cut, which features Guy Picciotto of punk legends Fugazi, and members of Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

The album is the sequel to North Star Deserter, Chesnutt’s 2007 collaborative recording with the same group, who will be joining Chesnutt on tour.

At The Cut was recorded by former Arcade Fire member Howard Bilerman at Montreal’s Hotel2Tango studio (the same location where the band cut North Star Deserter), and focuses on themes of “cowardice, courage, mortality, tenacity, defiance, mourning and memory.”

The new album will be released on Constellation Records. Want a sneak preview? Listen to the new songs  “Chain” and “Philip Guston” here and “Flirted With You All My Life” here.

In addition, the prolific Chesnutt will release another full-length album, Skitter On Take-Off, on October 6 via Vapor Records. That album was produced in part by Modern Lovers frontman and recent tour mate Jonathan Richman. Listen to a track from the album, “Society Sue,” here.
