“It’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list,” said Usher in a statement. “I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before. Thank you to the fans and everyone who made this opportunity happen. I’ll see you real soon.”
The NFL and Apple revealed news of Usher’s Super Bowl headlining slot with videos on social media, featuring NFL coach and former football and baseball player Deion Sanders, former running back Marshawn Lynch, and Kim Kardashian, who recently revealed how upset she was after missing Usher’s show in Las Vegas in 2022 due to weather. Usher invited Kardashian back when he returned to Vegas for his residency in April 2023.
In 2011, Usher joined The Black Eyed Peas on stage for their Halftime Show performance to sing his 2010 hit “OMG” with Peas’ frontman will.i.am at Super Bowl XLV in Arlington, Texas.
During an interview in April 2023, Usher first expressed interest in performing at the Super Bowl. “I’d be a fool to say no,” he said. “If things line up the way that we would all hope, one day that moment will happen. I’ve had the opportunity to grace that stage before in support of ‘OMG’ with will.i.am. But that was [just] one moment.”
He added, “I think I have a catalog that obviously speaks for itself. So, to be able to celebrate on that day, it’s obviously about football, but everybody anticipates the performance. Seeing Michel Jackson perform, seeing Snoop [Dogg] and [Dr.] Dre and all them perform, seeing so many incredible performances like Prince, it’s always been kind of a bucket list. How do I make it happen? I’m not certain about that.”
“Usher is an icon whose music has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape throughout his career, we couldn’t be more excited to have him headline this year’s Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show,” said Seth Dudowsky, head of music for the NFL, in a statement. “We look forward to working with Usher, Roc Nation, and Apple Music to bring fans another Halftime Show for the history books.”
This year also marks the first year that the Super Bowl will take place in Las Vegas. In 2023, the Super Bowl made its fourth return to Phoenix, Arizona, at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, with an explosive Halftime performance by Rihanna.
Usher released his ninth album Hard to Love in 2016 and recently shared several new singles in 2023, including “GLU,” “Boyfriend” with Keke Palmer, and “Good Good,” featuring Summer Walker and Savage 21. Columbian artist J Balvin also released his single “Dientes,” featuring Usher and DJ Khaled.
His Las Vegas residency, Usher: My Way, is set to wrap up on December 2, just months before his Super Bowl Halftime performance.
