TuneCore, the digital music distributor best known for helping small bands sell their music through a flat fee system on eleven different online stores, is now expanding its services. Starting on January 1, TuneCore will match bands with advertisers in order to exchange the band’s name and fan base for advertiser’s monetary support.
Under the program, TuneCore will charge advertisers a banner fee of $5,000 to place their ad on a band’s website. By clicking on the ad, the site will automatically direct the user to the corporate sponsor’s website, where they will then be able to download a song by the participating band. It is likely that users will have to provide some sort of information, such as an email address, to obtain the download code necessary to acquire the free song. In addition, each particular band will get to decide whether to display the advertiser’s link as an adbox or an in-blog link. All bands that participate with a given corporate sponsor will divide the $5,000 fee based on their percentage of generated downloads.
Discussing the idea behind the program, TuneCore CEO Jeff Price asked, “Why wouldn’t you want to go to these guys, with all these contacts on Facebook and MySpace, and say ‘Send me your friends’?”
Initially, TuneCore plans to launch the program with sponsor IK Multimedia. The company will post details on their website soon to provide other companies interested in the new program with additional information.
