Trent Willmon is a cowboy, an actor, an artisan, an activist, as well as a songwriter and singer. With his latest release, he can now add producer to his list of accomplishments. Helped by Rodney Clawson and Dan Frizell, he was quoted last year that if he had been left to his own devices, this album would have sounded “like Steve Earle and Bob Wills had a baby.”

With his latest release, he can now add producer to his list of accomplishments. Helped by Rodney Clawson and Dan Frizell, he was quoted last year that if he had been left to his own devices, this album would have sounded “like Steve Earle and Bob Wills had a baby.” He should have been left to his own devices, because now it sounds a lot like Jon Bon Jovi cock-blocked Bob Wills and Steve wasn’t the one pitching. There’s some really good songs here, covering all the standard subjects: God, girls, liquor and partying. Many sound as if they might actually have a shot at country radio which currently thrives on arena rock country, but I can’t help but wonder how much better they would sound if the drums weren’t loud and crashing and rock and roll guitar had been replaced with a Telecaster. What would R.S. Fields have done?
