Singer/songwriter/piano-woman Tori Amos has signed a deal with Universal Republic. The label plans to roll out her tenth studio album some time in the late spring or early summer of 2009. This is the third label for Amos, who was signed to Atlantic from 1992 to 2001, then released three albums for Epic. The new album will almost be a joint venture between the label and Amos’ own Galactic Media. Each song on the currently untitled record will have an accompanying visual component, which Amos is creating via Galatic Media. These “visualettes” will be in a documentary style, shot in either HD or Super 8 over the course of the past year. As far as the music, there’s no word on whether Amos will stick with the full rock band sound she resurrected for her last album, 2007’s American Doll Posse, or return to the more stripped sound of the albums preceding it.

Having always incorporated a unique visual style into her videos and live performances, the new album seems like the next logical step for Amos. She has long pushed boundaries and played with concepts. She seems to inspire others as well; in July a 500-page graphic novel based on her work was released. Comic Book Tattoo featured visual interpretations of Amos’ songs from over 80 artists, including friend Neil Gaiman. In addition to the new album, she is also working on a musical for London’s British National Theater, The Light Princess, with a tentative 2010 debut.
