Alan Jackson’s membership dues to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has served him well over the years with nine songwriting awards all told. Now with his chart-topping Good Time released this year, which garnered No. 1 slots with both pop and country music albums, Jackson has earned his way into the organization’s songwriter/artist of the year honor for this week’s 46th Annual ASCAP Country Music Awards.
Before a full house at the Ryman Auditorium of industry execs and star-studded guitar slingers – including Reba McEntire, LeAnn Rimes, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church and Kelly Clarkson, to name a few – Jackson accepted the pat on the back for his 2006 song “A Woman’s Love” and Good Time’s “Small Town Southern Man.” Though unabashedly a self-congratulatory red carpet for ASCAP loyalists, with such a laundry list of country music’s most lauded names in attendance, the event made for a virtual taster buffet of live performances. Kicked off with The Steel Drivers and followed by Dierks Bentley’s “Free & Easy (Down the Road I Go),” “Good Directions” by Rachel Thibodeau, among many others, the night was closed by “These Are My People” by Dave Berg and Rivers Rutherford.
While Jackson did not perform, the award did attract Country Music Television to create a 90-minute special on the modern country legend to be taped live on October 30 at the Ryman. In addition to Jackson, the tribute will include performances from George Strait, Brad Paisley and Martina McBride, and will premiere on Saturday, December 6 at 9 p.m. EST.
