The Weepies are back with consistency but no surprises. The sweet goldmine of Deb Talan’s vocals, the undeniably beautiful harmonies and the strong lyrical talent, appear again on their newest album, Hideaway. Yet this 14-track compilation may not be enough to make it a memorable find. The duo does lend versatility vocally and production-wise on tracks like Little Bird, whose waltz-like rhythm is by far the best on the album, simply because it’s different. The title track and the upbeat “Orbiting” breaks up the pattern of their signature quiet tunes, and “How You Survived The War” exemplifies their knack for writing (You rarely multiply all these divisions/You give yourself a list of cards/ I put on my green felt hat and pack our provisions/I play a merry prince of thieves). Overall, Hideaway is a well-done and enjoyable creation, but be prepared; it tends to run together.
