The Weepies — husband-and-wife team Deb Talan and Steve Tannen — carve out a unique niche with their happy-go-lucky brand of folk-pop, most of which has its roots in the couple’s seemingly endless love affair. Their sound would’ve fit well into the Dawson’s Creek–era pop coterie (the Paula Coles and Shawn Colvins of the not-so-distant past). And on their latest, Be My Thrill, a tight mix of romantic ballads (“They’re in Love, Where Am I?”) and upbeat foot-tappers (“I Was Made for Sunny Days”), the band seems to have mastered writing tunes destined for licensing royalties — not such a bad thing in this new era of music (their work has been used on such shows as ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and The CW’s Life Unexpected already, among others).

The record—like a relationship — is not without bumps along the way (“How Do You Get High” and “Empty Your Hands” are equally miss-able), but with short, sweet gems like “Be My Honeypie” and “Hummingbird,” the highs far outweigh the lows.
