Led Zeppelin’s front-man, Robert Plant, is known for his ear-piercing vocals. His towering vocal range has made him one of the most iconic vocalists of all time. He has one of the most grand and impressive voices in the business. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case in China.

In 2018, Plant sat down on The Late Show With James Corden and discussed a variety of topics. However, the conversation that caught the most attention was Plant’s story about his time in Hong Kong, China with his son. Plant’s telling of the story is quite funny, and you can tell he was both humbled and astonished by losing the Karaoke duel. But you know what they say, “the bigger they are the harder the fall.”
The Night of Robert Plant’s Defeat
Plant told Corden that he and his son went to Hong Kong in the late ’90s after the British handed over Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China in 1997. Seemingly to go witness history, and to have some fun. Plant and his son decided to participate in the latter, as the two went to a karaoke bar the night before their flight. It was then that Plant was served his dish of defeat.
Plant put his name down for Elvis, though so did a “bloak from Taiwan,” said Plant. Given they both signed up for the same song—a simple night of karaoke turned into a sing-off. “I was neck and neck with this guy, but all the time the Chinese were going for this Taiwanese guy, and I was really really good,” Plant shared. Plant seemingly had a humorous grudge over the loss. Nonetheless, it was a story for the ages.
The Elvis Impersonator
According to Plant, the Taiwanese man who beat him was actually an Elvis impersonator. Now, maybe this is true, or maybe Plant is trying to cover his losses. Regardless, knowing that Robert Plant lost a sing-off to some random dude in a bar is priceless. Plant, who has won countless awards and is viewed as a unique vocalist seemingly couldn’t hack it with this man.
Despite the outcome and Plant’s possibly bruised ego. The story is surprising, hysterical, and possibly an answer to a future trivia question. With that in mind, keep this story in the back of your brain not only for that purpose but also to impress your friends with some fun facts about Plant and Zeppelin.
