The Orb featuring David Gilmour
Metallic Spheres
Columbia Records
[Rating: 3 stars]

Can’t say this was a surprise – when you add legendary Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour to pioneering ambient electronic act The Orb it sounds exactly like David Gilmour playing over an Orb record! Gilmour’s guitar tone, though oft imitated, is undeniably unique and settles in nicely over the top of electronic music’s masters of the chill out session – sure sometimes you want to scream “keep it in the practice space, buddies!” when they start traveling too far down the noodle highway, but that doesn’t happen too often. If you spent any part of you teenager years sprawled on the living room floor stoned out of your mind and listening to Meddle you’re probably going to find a soft spot in your heart for this one, if not…well…there’s some really nice packaging in a sort of Lawnmower Man-meets-Feng Shui style that might…probably not. Basically, you know if you want to buy this album already, and if you do want buy this album odds are you will really enjoy it. But if you aren’t familiar with either artist don’t bother – there are better Orb records and there are better Gilmour records, and even though Metallic Spheres is quite enjoyable, we wouldn’t recommend it for newbies.
