Though not exactly a priceless discovery, the group experiments with raw sounds (the album was mostly a home recording) and varied instrumentation that separates Rival from its predecessors. As always, Pryor’s voice is smooth and inviting, contributing to the infectious ease of each track. “Fountain of Youth” and “Lay on the Rails” add an upbeat punch to the 14-track compilation, but songs like “Hughes,” an intentionally bare, acoustic tune laced with simple banjo, and the lyrically resounding “Lost Long Shot,” are most likely the ones you’ll want to play again.
