The Devil Makes Three Say Farewell to Addiction in Unintentionally Dark New Single “I Love Doing Drugs” (Exclusive Premiere)

The Devil Makes Three broke their years-long silence on Halloween when they announced their forthcoming album Spirits and released the title track as the lead single. The album’s second single will hit streaming platforms later today (December 3). American Songwriter is proud to premiere “I Love Doing Drugs.” Listen to the unintentionally dark track below.

Cooper McBean (guitar/tenor banjo) wrote “I Love Doing Drugs” for the new album. “I didn’t really even clock the fact that this is kind of a dark song until our producer Ted Hutt pointed it out to me,” McBean exclusively told American Songwriter. “And as it turns out, that’s kind of how addiction was for me; just careening through life thinking it’s funny and cute and no big deal/normal, until I finally got the picture that things had actually been pretty grim for a long time,” he added.

“It’s also sort of a fond farewell to substance abuse: Dear drugs and alcohol, it’s been real, we had some good times, no hard feelings, but this ain’t working for me anymore and I gotta go!” McBean said of the song’s underlying message.

The Devil Makes Three Go Deep with Spirits

Fans have been waiting for a new full-length from The Devil Makes Three since they released Chains Are Broken in 2018. Now, they’re proving that good things come to those who wait with the forthcoming record. At the same time, they’re getting a little more personal.

The songs on the forthcoming 13-track collection deal with themes including death, grief, mortality, and personal reflection. “There’s a theme of ghosts and death running through this album,” Pete Bernhard said.

“The world’s in a strange place right now. A lot of the songs on this record come from that place—trying to make sense of it all, whether it’s dealing with loss, addiction, or the way people are more divided than ever,” Bernhard explained. “At the end of the day, this band has always been about celebrating resilience. We’ve always found a way to push through and wanted to reflect that in this album,” he added.
