Barry White sadly departed this world in July of 2003. Though people will still make love to his music, they may try the dauntless daggers of Missiles for a similar and altogether other deeply bluer effect. There is a “You’re The First, The Last, My Everything” feel to this record you just can’t shake. It may be difficult to bear the mellifluous and melancholy “Missiles” or the cosmic empathy of “Meltdown in A Major” unless your chin is ensconced in a lover’s shoulder in tight embrace, or you are otherwise entwined. “Saviour” the 11-minute-plus climax of Missiles is a soulful reprise in form and length of material of their recently re-released 2003 effort No Cities Left. On it Murray Lightburn sings, perhaps out of contrition, the refrain: “I’ll make it right”. After 2006’s somewhat unfocused Gang of Losers, he and the rest of The Dears of Montreal have hit their target.
