The Civil Wars and T-Bone Burnett have teamed up to create the soundtrack for a new documentary on poverty in America, A Place At The Table. The film’s soundtrack will be released February 26—but they’ve given us an early taste of what to expect with the single “Long Time Gone.”
The phrase “long time gone” has been around in popular music for years; it’s been sung by everyone from Bob Dylan to The Dixie Chicks to Crosby, Stills and Nash. Burnett and The Civil Wars do the legendary line justice, producing a powerful folk number with flawless vocals from Joy Williams and John Paul White of Civil Wars.
Burnett and The Civil Wars are responsible for the entire 14-song soundtrack, which will be released via Sensibility Music. It’s a promising trio, with Civil Wars fresh off their Grammy win for “’Safe and Sound” from The Hunger Games Soundtrack, which they collaborated on with Burnett and Taylor Swift. The artists and label have both agreed to donate 100% of the producer/artist royalties to The Participant Foundation—an organization that supports programs that help create a sustainable and peaceful world. William said, “being a part of A Place At The Table opened my eyes to an epidemic that is happening in our country right now—underneath many of our noses. It’s happening to our neighbors, to our friends, to children. It’s a silent battle that can be won, if we as a nation set our minds to ending it. Linking arms with T Bone Burnett to create music for such a timely and important film as this was an honor.”
A Place At The Table will hit theaters March 1 under Participant Media and Magnolia Pictures, who previously collaborated on Food Inc. The documentary will take a nuanced look at the hunger crisis in the US through the eyes of three Americans who struggle with finding a meal daily. Those profiled include individuals from across the country, differing both in age and the problems they face.
Directors Lori Silverbush and Kristi Jacobson take a close look at food insecurity in America, and the issues it poses economically, socially and culturally. The film includes insights from experts in sociology, nutrition policy and social activists like Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges and Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio.
Alongside a nationwide theater release, the film will also be available On Demand and through iTunes.
