Sufjan Stevens has announced that he’ll release The Age Of Adz, his first full-length album of original material in five years, on October 12 via Asthmatic Kitty Records. The album follows Stevens’ new EP, All Delighted People, which was released online last week.

The album, who’s title is pronounced “the age of odds,” oddly enough, is the first Sufjan Stevens full-length that isn’t a concept album. According to a press release: “There are few narrative conceits or character sketches, no historical panoramas, no civic gestures, no scene, setting, conflict, resolution or denouement. Rather, the themes developed here are neither historical nor polemical, but rather personal and primal: love, sex, death, disease, illness, anxiety and suicide all figure in the songwriting.”

But what about the title? It’s a shout-out to schizophrenic 20th century American artist Royal Robertson, who depicted aliens, monsters, and scenes from the Last Judgement. Stevens incorporates Robertson’s drawings in the album artwork.
