As the race for digital domination between streaming services rages on, more details are coming to light about the deals between services and labels. The Verge, a tech and media news website, obtained a copy of Sony Music’s licensing contract with Spotify, a two-year contract with an optional third year that promises up to $42.5 million in advances to the label, as well as $9 million in free advertising space with the option to purchase an additional $15 million of more space at a heavily discounted rate. But the crux of the issue is: Is any of that advance money going to the artists?
