Here’s one supergroup we never even considered: what if Sonic Youth teamed up with Led Zeppelin? How insane (and noisy) would that be? The mind boggles.

While we’ll probably never live to hear that combination, but here’s the next best thing. Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and Sonic Youth have joined forces to compose “Nearly Ninety,” a full-length dance piece, written in honor of choreographer Merce Cunningham. Sonic Youth and JPJ will perform the song on April 16th at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of “Merce Cunningham at 90,” a festival celebrating the experimental dance maven’s work.

Cunningham has worked previously with Radiohead, Sigur Ros, and John Cage. Jones himself was a musical guest at a London performance by Cunningham’s company in 2005.
