“Wallet”

By Shane Yoder

He’s been trying to stretch his dollar

It’s the stress of a single father.

Got a cart full of diapers and a Star Wars toy.

It ain’t fair to break the heart of his happy little boy.

He hates the fact he’s got to choose

When the wallet opens up cause he don’t have enough

This aint what he wants but his boy is growing up.

It’s love, tough love when the wallet opens up.

Now he’s having a drink alone.

His son got a place of his own.

He knew this day would come so he’s been saving up.

Gave it all to that little boy to buy all the toys he wants.

He looked down at the tab by his empty cup.

And the wallet opened up, he didn’t have enough.

But this is what he wants, his boy is growing up.

It’s love, tough love when the wallet opens up.

Flipping the channels, nothing good on that night.

Saw his son on 60 Minutes, in the spotlight.

“So tell the world the secret to all your success?”

He simply said “My Dad, I want to pay him back.”

Then the wallet opened up, he didn’t have enough

To give back to that man that went broke in love for him.

He sacrificed it all now this wallet seemed so small

when it opened up.

On the day he passed I etched his words in stone

It’s love, tough love that takes you home.
