On their sixth album, Turin Brakes carve out their own transatlantic folk sound, mixing American traditions — Laurel Canyon folk, Delta blues, heartland rock & roll — with the psychedelic sweep of Pink Floyd and Travis. The record was tracked in two weeks at Rockfield Studios, the famous Welsh studio where Oasis, Coldplay and Queen all recorded their own chart-topping albums in years past. The result is We Were Here, a 12-track album that rustles up all the highlights of Turin Brakes’ decade-and-a-half career.
You’ll have to wait until October 8th to hear the full thing, but we can give you a taste of side B. Behold: “Inbetween,” a highlight from the album’s second half, which mixes a vintage guitar groove with the rafter-reaching warble of Olly Knight’s voice.
“‘Inbetween’ was born out of a jam,” Knight tells American Songwriter. “We were enjoying sounding like Crazy Horse on holiday and thought we’d better get some words together. Lyrically it’s got nothing to hide – essentially life is a solemn journey from the forceps to the stone, as Joni Mitchell sang, but in between all that darkness we get to have sisters and brothers and we can face the music together in chorus.”
