We’re pleased to premiere a new track from Natalie Royal’s upcoming studio album, Harbinger, out March 11.
Royal, a Nashville native who studied songwriting at Belmont University and describes her style as “gut folk,” recorded the album at Nashville’s The Bomb Shelter. The song we’re premiering, “Supernova,” deals with the aftermath of her father’s death. Royal says she read Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet while writing the song and cites the passage “On Joy and Sorrow” as its inspiration.
“Without sorrow, it’s harder to appreciate the joyous moments in life … I truly felt this when I lost my dad in 2011,” Royal said. “This was the most sorrowful moment of my life, but, as cheesy as this sounds, in the moment I lost my father, I truly do feel like I found a new love. My now husband drove through the night from Nashville to be with me during that time. My father never met him, but I know he would have given his blessing. I would give anything to have him back again, but I always feel like that was almost a way of him passing his love onto someone else who would love me unconditionally.”
