Song Premiere: Eli Young Band, “Revelations”

The boys in Eli Young Band used to get by with a little help from their friends. Three years ago, they scored back-to-back chart toppers with a cover of Will Hoge’s “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” and a double-platinum version of the Liz Rose/Lee Brice collaboration “Crazy Girl.” Last summer, they landed another number one with “Drunk Last Night,” a drunk-dialing power ballad written by Josh Osborne and Laura Veltz. On the band’s new album, though, the four bandmates — Mike Eli, Chris Thompson, Jon Jones, and James Young — write over half of the songs themselves, taking the reigns for their most personal record to date.

“Revelations,” the third single from 10,000 Towns, delivers all the goods that Eli Young Band fans have come to expect: the overlapping guitars, the vocal harmonies, and the pitch-perfect production, with everything building up to a super-sized  Technicolor chorus. Technically, it’s a song about cheating girlfriends, but don’t let that stop you from pumping your first in the air.

“‘Revelations’ was a fun song for us to write,” says bass player Jon Jones. “We typically tend to write songs about where we are in our lives and pull from personal experience, but this song was fun because it was none of that. I remember swapping stories with each other about friends who caught their significant others in the act, and the little things that they picked up on leading up to that revelation. There are a number of emotions that someone in that situation goes through, but there is a sense of relief and elation when those suspicions are confirmed. We hope that it is a song people can identify with…. but not too much.”
