Dietrich Gosser may look like the cool dude who assists you at the Apple store, but he sounds more like the cool musician whose songs you want streaming from your computer. His upcoming full-length record Oh To Begin! drops on Sept. 24 and it’s one worth anticipating.

Although he hasn’t abandoned his raw folk background with the title track, “Oh To Begin!,” he also wasn’t shy about spicing up his style by lacing it with a pop-y vibe and even a little bit of synth.  “Oh To Begin!” builds from a simple introduction to an instrument-heavy tune with the overlay of Gosser’s soft vocals and romantic demeanor.

“This song was built out of a practice tape that Jeremiah Nelson, Dan Kuemmel and I made before we even realized that we were working on this record,” recalls Gosser. “Dan had moved out into the country and Jerry and I were driving out there every weekend and we just couldn’t stop listening to this recording.  We somehow started riffing on the idea of a great lunar real estate swindle and we just started laughing and belting out ideas in the car.  ‘Oh to begin, the land is cheap…’ really had us rolling. I think the best songs probably start as jokes. Brutal, self-effacing jokes that ultimately reveal our shortcomings as friends, lovers and good citizens, but jokes just the same.”

If “Oh To Begin!” is a joke, it’s a good one.
