SanDisk, the company most famously known for their SD Media card used in a wide variety of media devices, is preparing to release a new form of digital media called slotMusic. The company plans on taking micro SD cards and preloading them with music for sale in retail stores.

No official word has been given on how and where the cards would be sold, but it is known that both Best Buy and Wal-Mart are interested in carrying slotMusic. Each card would be one regular album, but in addition to music files would include album artwork and liner notes, much like iTunes’ downloadable digital booklets available in their online store.

slotMusic cards could currently be used in cell phones and media devices that are already micro SD-ready, and if the micro albums catch on then card-reading devices could be added to stereos, cars, and more. SanDisk is testing the waters of slotMusic by only releasing about thirty albums (via Universal) to the market until they can get a feel for consumer response.

In a desperate attempt to revive physical media, both SanDisk and the music industry have hope that slotMusic could be an alternative to the struggling compact disc. The recent failure of USB and memory stick-based music sales, however, does not provide much basis for optimism.
