Oliver Anthony has been a controversial figure since he found overnight success with “Rich Men North of Richmond.” More recently, he announced his departure from the music industry to make music under the umbrella of a traveling ministry. Earlier this month, he released a vlog in which he bashed the industry, made bold accusations, and trashed Cowboy Carter. Earlier today (December 9), Paul Cauthen shared his thoughts on Anthony.

Big Velvet didn’t mince words when he took to social media with a video message for Anthony. Taggind the singer/songwriter, Cauthen wrote, “ Oliver Anthony ain’t what he says he is folks. I’ve heard too many bad stories for too long now. It’s sad when a good singer and songwriter lets their own emotions get in the way.” He was nowhere near finished taking the singer-turned-minster to task.

Paul Cauthen Takes Oliver Anthony to Task
“Thumping on your Bible at live shows and claiming this and that when you’re actually hurting commerce and small businesses all over the country. You don’t talk about when you get contracted a 100 grand to play a show and then you stiff the venues because the venue is trying to make enough money on the ticket sale to pay your hundred grand cost,” he wrote, referencing the debacle that was Anthony’s canceled show at Cotton Eyed Joe in Knoxville, Tennessee.
“Usually I’m in favor of the artist nine times out of 10. This is that one time where I’m going to back the venues! I’ll tell you one thing I am a sinner, I have faith in Jesus Christ, but I will never be perfect. I don’t think Oliver Anthony is perfect either. Also, this is coming from somebody that didn’t have overnight fame on TikTok,” he concluded.
The “Cocaine Country Dancing” wasn’t done, though. The one-way exchange got even more heated in the video message attached to the post.
“Alright, well, I guess I’ve had enough,” Cauthen began. “Oliver Anthony shut your mouth. You want to talk about people using Auto-Tune and people boosting up ticket prices, and you yellin’ and screamin’ at people who are talent buyers that want to bring you in and give you money to do what we do. All you’re doing is ruining relationships and hurting people that actually work in our industry,” he added. “Now, I know you don’t get it because you’re used to being out in the mud in the holler. But here in Texas, we have songwriters and a lot of people who have been working in this business before you were playing your little TikTok songs.”
A Message for the People
Paul Cauthen took a moment to address people who support Anthony as well. “I want people to understand that when you think this Oliver Anthony guy is just the best and hung the moon, actually he’s screwing people over,” he said.
Then, he went back to speaking directly to Anthony. “Keep your ass and your mouth shut. All we’ve been hearing is bullsh*t, bullsh*t, bullsh*t. I’m sick and tired of people claiming that they’re something that they’re not. I’ve been in this business since before this redhead was wiping his ass,” he added.
“Don’t be talking sh*t about other people that you think used Auto-Tune or whatever. So, shut your mouth. Sing songs. Shut up.”
