Shane Hawkins and Violet Grohl Join Foo Fighters Onstage

During a recent set at the Boston Calling music festival on Friday (May 26), headliners the Foo Fighters made the event a family affair. “We’ve been in this band for so long, we really are a family. And our families are with us tonight because we need to do this together,” Dave Grohl said during the fest before performing the song “Cold Day in the Sun,”

The event was the beginning of the band’s new tour, its first without longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins, who passed away last year at 50 years old after a drug overdose while the Foos were on tour in Colombia.

Grohl played “Cold Day in the Sun,” a song he used to sing with Hawkins, giving an emotive performance of the song during the band’s warmup show in Gilford, New Hampshire. Said Grohl, on Friday, ahead of the song, “I tried to do it the other night, and I’m gonna try to do it again. And I’m gonna do it for Taylor’s family, and I’m gonna do it for Taylor.”

After the performance of “Cold Day,” Hawkins’ son Shane stepped out to perform. The teenage drummer first wowed audiences last year during tribute shows for Hawkins in London and L.A. On Friday, Shane played the song “I’ll Stick Around,” which he also played in L.A. at the tribute for his father. Fans can see video footage from the performance below.

Could Shane be the new Foo Fighters drummer in a few years? Seems possible. Right now, the band is touring with seasoned drummer Josh Freese, who wore a t-shirt that read “Fingers crossed for the new guy” while onstage.

Shane wasn’t the only “family member” to join the festivities. Grohl’s daughter, singer Violet Grohl, was also on stage. Violet sang “Shame Shame” with her father on the song, and sat on the drum riser during “Rope.”
