Jeff Buckley’s “Last Goodbye” gets the Scarlett Johansson treatment
Videos by American Songwriter
Ambitious actress Scarlett Johansson just can’t leave music alone. In 2008, she released Anywhere I Lay My Head, an album of Tom Waits covers, which also featured “Song for Jo,” one of her own compositions. Previously, Johansson sang back-up with a reunited Jesus and Mary Chain at the Coachella Festival in 2007.
Now that she’s covered one of the lowest, growliest voices in rock and roll, Johansson’s tackling one of the highest, covering Jeff Buckley’s “Last Goodbye” for the soundtrack to the upcoming movie He’s Just Not That into You.
Buckley, the son of famed folk musician Tim Buckley, rose to fame in the mid-90’s thanks to his multi-octave vocal prowess, lush songwriting, and devilish good looks. He released only one album, the achingly beautiful Grace, before dying tragically in 1997, when he drowned in the Mississippi River.
Does Johansson do Buckley justice here, or is he rolling over in his grave?
