Sam Morrow has been on the radars of fans of left-of-center country since he released his debut album Ephemeral in 2014. Now, the Los Angeles based musician is preparing to release his third full-length effort, Concrete and Mud.

Concrete and Mud finds the 27-year-old artist exploring his myriad influences, including Texas country, Southern rock, and old-school funk. Morrow tapped Eric Corne to produce the album, which the pair recorded live in the studio on a vintage Neve 8068 console. Fellow Los Angeles artist Jaime Wyatt guests on three tracks, including the duet “Skinny Elvis.”
Morrow has also shared the album’s first single, “Quick Fix.” The slinky rocker features a greasy guitar groove and some of Morrow’s most soulful vocals to date, a sound he attributes to his reverence for Southern rock bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Little Feat.
“This song is a nod to my addictive behaviors and my lack of patience,” Morrow says. “It’s a good change from anything else I’ve ever done because it embraces my addictive behaviors and looks at them in a bit of a naïve, playful light. Production wise, I thought this one would be a cool one to double the vocal for a Skynyrd vibe. We used a clavinet for that pulsing ‘Cripple Creek’ sound and Eamon Ryland pulled off one of the best slide solos I have ever heard. Turned out to be my favorite recording I have ever made.”
Concrete and Mud is out March 30 on Forty Below Records. Listen to “Quick Fix” below.
