Dartford, a town in England, is naming several of their streets after songs by rock and roll icons the Rolling Stones. Sympathy Street, taken from the Stones hit “Sympathy for the Devil,” is just one of the thirteen new names Dartford residents can be expecting to see on street signs soon.
Dartford, a town in England, is naming several of their streets after songs by rock and roll icons the Rolling Stones. Sympathy Street, taken from the Stones hit “Sympathy for the Devil,” is just one of the thirteen new names Dartford residents can be expecting to see on street signs soon.
Why the sudden interest in the Stones? Dartford is not only the birthplace of Mick Jagger, but also holds the elementary school where the frontman met fellow rocker and partier Keith Richards, the Stones’ guitarist. Legend has it the two met later in life at a Dartford train station and the rest is rock history.
This history is what drove the residents of Dartford to make the decision to spice up their town’s infrastructure.
“There’s a lot of excitement and support for the Stones in the borough as a whole,” Oakley Hartney, spokeswoman for the Dartford Council, said. “Everyone is very supportive and this is a way to celebrate.”
“It is a very groovy development-a very modern, creative community and I think people will enjoy the street names. It is not just fun-it puts the place on the map and links to our heritage.” council leader Jeremy Kite added.
Other names bringing Dartford residents a little satisfaction include “Cloud Close,” “Rainbow Close,” “Stones Avenue,” “Little Red Walk” and “Dandelion Row.”
Dartford is also home to the Mick Jagger Music and Arts Centre.
