Monday, (the 20th anniversary of World Aids Day) saw the launch of the (RED)Wire digital magazine. Some of music’s biggest acts will be providing exclusive tracks and other content for the weekly service. U2, Elvis Costello, the Dixie Chicks, Bob Dylan, Coldplay, R.E.M., and John Legend are just a few of the contributors so far. For $5 per month, subscribers will receive a new issue every Wednesday. Each new issue will contain one exclusive track from a major artist, a track by an artist (RED) wants to showcase, a nonmusic “surprise” piece, and updates from Africa by and about the people (RED) helps. Each Wednesday the new issue will appear on the (RED)Wire player subscribers download. The player is custom-designed to suit the unique format; it also drops the music and other content automatically into iTunes.
In addition to boasting the first new Dixie Chicks track since 2007, (RED)Wire will also present a couple of interesting collaborations. The first issue features Elvis Costello and the Police, and The Killers have collaborated with Elton John and the Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant for the Christmas song “Joseph.” The nonmusic pieces could be anything from video to photography to a reading by artists or actors. Half of the $5 monthly fee will go to the Global Fund, which provides medicine for women and children with HIV and AIDS in Africa. (RED)Wire is part of the wider (RED) program co-founded by U2’s Bono, which works to fight AIDS in Africa.
