Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea has gotten into the habit of sharing his favorite music from emerging artists on social media. Recently, he posted an artist on Instagram whose music he’s been loving, sharing that he “listen[s] to it most days” during last leg of tour.
The artist in question is Mei Semones, who creates a “sweetly evocative blend of jazz, bossa nova, and math-y indie rock,” per her website. Flea praised her newest EP, Kabutomushi, which is also her debut on Bayonet Records.
“For the last couple of months I’ve been listening to this ep by Mei Semones called Kabutomushi,” Flea wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of Mei. “It gets me floating around my hotel room, it’s an absolutely beautiful record. She’s an incredible musician, deep guitar player and singer. The music is deft, articulate, and carries a mysterious power. So many good riffs, melodies, and rhythms.”
To conclude his post, Flea shared that Mei helps give him hope for the younger generation. “This whole last leg of tour I listen to it most days,” he wrote. “It gives me so much hope for the young people making music today!” adding, “Give it a listen. KABUTOMUSHI. MEI SEMONES.”

Flea Shares What He’s Listening To as Red Hot Chili Peppers Head Into Last Leg Of Tour
Red Hot Chili Peppers kicked off their United Love Tour in May, traveling around North America. They played a headlining show at Bonnaroo in June, and currently have three more dates left. The band will head to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; Noblesville, Indiana; and St. Louis, Missouri on July 22, 25, and 30, respectively. They have had support from Otoboke Beaver, IRONTOM, and Seun Kuti & Egypt80.
The band is great as championing up-and-coming artists in their opening acts, shining a spotlight on young, diverse talent. Mei Semones, for example, creates sonic masterpieces of vulnerability and universal human emotions. She is classically trained in jazz guitar from Berklee College of Music, and has been playing guitar since age 11.
“Blending everything that I like together and trying to make something new – that’s what feels most natural to me,” Mei is quoted on her website. “It’s what feels most true to who I am as an artist.”
Fans of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea, and unique acts should keep an eye on Flea’s Instagram to see what he’ll be listening to next.
