Before Radiohead commenced their summer tour on May 5, they commissioned a U.K. company, Best Foot Forward, to study the carbon and ecological footprints left from the band’s previous two tours. Radiohead utilized the findings from the study to implement major changes to their summer tour that recently concluded with a final performance in Berlin on July 8. To cut back on their biggest carbon footprint, fan travel to venues, the band scheduled their concerts in major city centers; hoping fans would make use of available public transportation options. For their part, Radiohead shipped their stage equipment to and from the U.S. by sea, used efficient LED stage lighting, and curbed unnecessary air travel.

With their fall tour scheduled to begin Friday at the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago, Radiohead is attempting to reduce their carbon footprint even more by increasing their focus on fan impact on the environment. Recently, all fans who purchased their concert tickets from the band’s W.A.S.T.E. merchandising website received a survey asking their travel plans to the concert venue. After selecting their transportation choice, the site then provides the user with data displaying the impact their travel choice will have on the environment. Radiohead is providing a free live mp3 download of “Bangers and Mash” from their June 6 concert in Dublin to all fans that complete the survey. The band plans to use information gathered from the fan survey to plan more environmentally friendly tours in the future, as well as to increase environmental awareness among their concertgoers.
