Surf-punk group Tacocat, based out of Seattle, have made a name for themselves with their catchy, youthful songs. Their most recent album, Lost Time, deals with women’s issues in an approachable, plainspoken yet subversive way.

To some, however, they may be better known for their role in the #SharkGate internet phenomenon of 2014. After Katy Perry used a dancing shark in her Superbowl halftime performance that highly resembled a shark in Tacocat’s video for their song “Crimson Wave,” the hashtag was born out of the Tacocat fanbase’s (occasionally outraged) response to the two sharks’s striking similarity. The band, though, responded jovially.

When asked to cover a song live for AV Club‘s Undercover feature, they finally had the chance to address their strange history with Katy Perry.  Watch Tacocat cover Perry’s hit “Roar” below.
