While it seems that Malone has been on top of the world for more than a decade, that isn’t the case. In fact, earlier in his career, he was putting on a brave face for fans while spiraling into depression and self-medicating with alcohol.

Over the weekend, he sat down with CBS Sunday Morning’s Anthony Mason to talk about his life and career. During the conversation, he revealed that his daughter and her mother helped pull him out of that dark place.

Post Malone on How His Daughter Saved Him

While talking about Malone’s daughter whose name he keeps private, Anthony Mason asked “You said she saved your life?” After the hitmaker confirmed that he had said that, Mason followed up with “In what way?”

“Four years ago, I was on a rough path,” Post Malone said. When Mason asked what he was wrestling with at the time, Malone simply replied, “Everything.”

Putting a finer point on his answer, he said loneliness was his biggest demon at the time. Then he revealed what a normal day for him looked like four years ago. “Getting up, having a good cry, drinking, and going and living your life. And when you go to lay down, drinking some more and having a good cry and just like ‘I gotta wake up tomorrow and do this again.’”

“I don’t feel like that anymore,” Malone said. “It’s the most amazing thing,” he said. However, he keeps a positive outlook on those dark times. “I needed it, for myself, to figure out who I am,” he explained.

Those dark times also inspired him to share positive messages with his fans. He wants them to know that they’re loved. “It’s important,” he said. “Because not everyone knows it, ya know? There’s a lot of very lonely people,” he added. “I don’t want people to feel how I felt and I know they do. And I’m here and I’m on stage and I just want everyone to feel welcome and to feel loved. That’s the most important thing to me.”
