Phish are back in the songwriting game — their latest single, the 13-minute long “Time Turns Elastic,” was released to iTunes yesterday. The song will be featured on Phish’s upcoming studio album, due July 28, featuring production by Billy Breathes’ Steve Lillywhite. The band are highly excited about their latest record, with bassist Mike Gordon writing that it was tentatively titled “The Best F**king Phish Album Ever!”

The new single was co-written by Phish frontman Trey Anastasio and Orchestra Nashville Composer-in-Residence Don Hart, and was performed by Anastasio, with full orchestra, in Nashville and Baltimore last year. “I’ve never come close to the collaboration I’ve had with Don Hart,”  Anastasio has said. “A lot of work done on this piece is conceptual conversations. It’s a true collaboration.”

Another new Phish song, “Backwards Down the Line,” was broken out by the band two months back, during their first live show together in four years. Phish will kick off their summer tour on May 31 in Boston’s Fenway Park.
