In a move that no one saw coming, Beatles legend Paul McCartney will reportedly join surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear at tonight’s 12.12.12 Concert in New York City.
The ad hoc group, who had been meeting in secret, will perform a new song that they improvised in rehearsal. The concert, which benefits victims of Hurricane Sandy, will mark the first time Grohl and Novoselic have performed together in twenty years (maybe they should cover “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” while they’re at it.)
A spokesman for McCartney says the foursome began playing together at the suggestion of Grohl (who currently fronts multi-platinum arena rockers Foo Fighters), who asked him if he wanted to “jam with some mates.”
According to The Guardian, the 70-year old McCartney was previously unaware of Nirvana’s role in music:
“I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said: ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ “And somebody whispered to me: ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
Tune in to tonight’s concert at 7:30 ET to watch McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton and others perform live from Madison Square Garden. Also on the bill is Roger Waters, who says that he’ll be joined by Eddie Vedder for “Comfortably Numb.”
