It was just announced that Patti Smith‘s critically acclaimed and National Book Award winning 201o memoir Just Kids is getting the TV treatment. Showtime will develop a miniseries based on the memoir, which chronicles Smith’s time with famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in New York City in the early days of their careers. Smith will co-write and produce the show, which, as of now, has no firm release date.

“A limited series on Showtime will allow us to explore the characters more deeply, enabling us to develop stories beyond the book and allow a measure of unorthodox presentation,” Smith explained in a press release. “The medium of a television limited series offers narrative freedom and a chance to expand upon the themes of the book.”
