On this day (August 28) in 2001, Toby Keith released his sixth studio album Pull My Chain. The album contained No. 1 hits “My List,” “I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight,” and “I Wanna Talk About Me.” It was also Keith’s first album to top the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and his first crossover hit.

When Keith made his debut with “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” it went to No. 1. He went on to release several more No. 1 singles throughout the decade. However, that couldn’t be said about his album. His debut was the only collection to miss the top ten, peaking at No. 17 on the country albums survey. None reached the chart’s summit, though.

Keith started his career strong and continued to build momentum. His songs were all over the radio and fans were all but begging for more. While many remember him as a ‘90s country star, he truly came into superstardom in the new millennium. As the sun set on the ‘90s, it rose on Keith.
Toby Keith Hits His Stride with Pull My Chain
Toby Keith kicked off the millennium with a string of hit singles and his 2001 album, Pull My Chain. It topped the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. The coming decade would see the Oklahoma native hitting his stride. He notched 15 chart-topping singles between 2000 and 2010. Additionally, he released eight albums in that timespan with seven topping the chart.
Pull My Chain kicked off an impressive chart run for TK. He had four consecutive No. 1 country albums. Maybe more impressively, all eight of the albums he released in the decade were top 10 crossover hits. Three topped the all-genre Billboard 200 album chart and all but Pull My Chain peaked in the top five.
The most successful album of this period, and Keith’s career, was Shock’n Y’all. It spent 13 weeks at the top of the country chart and spent a week atop the all-genre chart.
Keith’s hot streak didn’t end with his 2009 album American Ride, though. He continued to release hit albums throughout his career. He released five more top-five country albums, four of which were top-10 crossover hits. Only his final album Peso in My Pocket (2021) failed to reach those heights. It peaked at No. 25 on the country chart and failed to hit the Billboard 200.
