It is not clear what song Rodrigo will perform at the awards ceremony, but her single “Vampire” has been nominated for six VMAs. “Vampire” will be included on Rodrigo’s second studio album, Guts, which will be released on September 8. On August 11, Rodrigo dropped “Bad Idea Right?,” the second single from her forthcoming album.

At this year’s VMAs, Rodrigo is nominated for Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. Taylor Swift has the most VMA nominations this year with eight, while SZA holds six.

Rodrigo recently spoke with fellow musician Phoebe Bridgers as part of a piece for Interview Magazine. During their conversation, Rodrigo revealed she walked out of Ari Aster’s esoteric 2023 film Beau is Afraid, starring Joaquin Phoenix, calling the movie “a bad acid trip.”

“I’m a big thriller girl, but I watch a few scary movies here and there. I convince myself that I see shit after I come home from watching Insidious or something. Also, I watched that new Ari Aster movie Beau Is Afraid, and I got so scared,” Rodrigo told Bridgers. “I literally had to walk out of the theater. I have never had such a visceral reaction to a movie in my life. It felt like a bad acid trip.”

However, Bridgers seemed to love the film. “I’m so glad you brought that up, because you are right,” the “Kyoto” singer said in response. “That is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen, but I was laughing the entire time.”

Rodrigo agreed with Bridgers, despite feeling terrified by the film. “That’s the only reasonable reaction,” Rodrigo added. “Your body just can’t process it. You have to laugh.”

During the same conversation with Bridgers, Rodrigo discussed the social media whirlwind she encountered after she released her very first single. “I feel like last time there was so much weird media shit and I had no idea how to deal with any of it,” Rodrigo said. “Literally, it was the first song out of the gate and all of that shit happened. I felt so ill-equipped.”
