You may be able to find Thunder Road on your own, but do you know to get to Abrams Bridge, Shanty Lane, and The River? First they take Manhattan…then they take Berlin. R.E.M. are 14 records into a legendary career, and their 15th studio album is now in the can. The band announced that they’ve just finished the yet-to-be-named disc with producer Jackknife Lee in Berlin (the same city that U2 cut Achtung Baby in, and David Bowie recorded most of Low) and are eying a spring 2011 release.
“Berlin is a pulsing, exciting city with so many varied and distinctive neighborhoods, iconic history all around, great food at all levels and from every corner of the world . . . an excellent place to set up camp and make a great record,” writes the band on their website.
After making her return to the stage to sing a shaky version of the Zutons’ “Valerie,” Amy Winehouse is telling the Metro that her next album will be out in January. We can’t wait. As for the reason why her onstage return hit a few speedbumps, Winehouse says: “Mark and I recorded two versions of ‘Valerie.’ We released the one that came out like the Supremes, but I play the other version with my band. When I got there, I completely forgot it was his version we were singing, so I was probably a bit out of sync. It was really fun to be onstage with him, though.”
Winehouse and Ronson have recorded a song together on the upcoming Quincy Jones tribute.
At 74, Jerry Lee Lewis is far from too old to rock and roll, but it’s country music that’s on his mind. Lewis has drafted Merle Haggard, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, John Mayer, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to guest on his upcoming album, Mean Old Man, due September 7th on Verve/Universal. Kris Kristofferson wrote the title track, and Willie Nelson and Haggard lend an air of authenticity on “Swinging Doors” and “Whiskey River.” Jagger appears to sing “Dead Flowers, ” and Richards contributes guitar to Lewis’s cover of “Sweet Virginia.” Other guests include Kid Rock and Slash. Because, you know… if you’re recording a guest star-filled album, it’s practically a contractual obligation to get those guys on there.
