Note to obnoxious fans: when Jeff Mangum comes out of seclusion to sing Neutral Milk Hotel songs in honor of New Zealand musician Chris Knox, don’t sing along. You may be picked up on YouTube, screwing up a historic moment.
Mangum took the stage at a benefit Manhattan’s Le Poisson Rouge to sing a few songs for his ailing friend, whose songs are the subject of the tribute album Stroke, which also features contributions from Yo La Tengo, Will Oldham, and Stephin Merritt.
